Growing Up is Harder Than It Looks

“Thank you Mrs. Jacobson!” Emily Stewart shouted as she entered the house. Emily could smell the aroma of garlic bread cooking in the oven as she walked down the hall toward the kitchen.

“Hey sweetie” her mom said while stirring the pasta sauce as Emily entered into the kitchen. “How was practice?”

“It was fine, but Makayla’s mom was late picking us up again, so we had to sit in the dark, freezing park alone for 15 minutes, I know you said you wanted to wait until I’ve had my license for longer before I start driving other people, but please could you just make an exception and let me drive Makayla and myself to practice. It would be way easier on you and Mrs. Jacobson” Emily pleaded with her mother knowing more than likely this conversation was not going to end in her favor. Emily was a newly licensed junior in high school seeking the independence she felt she deserved and being allowed to drive other people would be a huge step forward for her. Despite being slightly babied by her mom, more than likely due to the fact she was the only child to a single mom, Emily saw herself as an adult and wished other people would do the same.
