Growing Up is Harder Than It Looks – Chapter Four

Growing Up is Harder Than It Looks – Chapter Four.

The loud rumbling of Emily’s stomach woke her up from a very enjoyable dream she was having about Josh. She laid there for a moment, hoping she’d fall back asleep into her previous dream, but the ache of her empty stomach continued to grow and she realized that her attempt to fall back asleep was futile. As Emily looked up she saw that Sarah and Susie were still asleep, so she quietly slipped out of her sleeping back and waddled out of the room and into the kitchen, not making a sound except for the crinkle of her Goodnite. As she entered the kitchen she saw her mom and aunt out on the front porch smoking a cigarette, and decided to go say good morning to them before getting her cereal.

“Good morning” her mom and aunt both greeted her as she walked out the door and onto the porch.

“Good morning” she replied as she went and took a seat next to her mom. Emily was surprised to feel how full her Goodnite was as it squished under her as she sat down. Emily was truly amazed with the amount she wet every night, she never leaked. The Goodnites seem to fit her smaller body so perfectly, no pee could ever sneak out.

“How’d you sleep?” Her mom asked after taking a long drag from her cigarette and exhaling the smoke into the air.

“Pretty good” she replied. “Your floor is surprising comfortable Aunt Karen!” She added laughing.

The way the morning breeze was blowing, all the smoke from both her aunt’s and mom’s cigarette was coming straight into her face, so as she laughed she took in a lung full of smoke. Surprisingly though, the smoke didn’t bother her as much as usual. After spending a few more minutes talking to her aunt and mom, Emily decided it was time to feed her empty stomach and waddled back inside. After pouring herself a bowl a Captain Crunch she sat down at the table and began to eat. A few minutes later, Sarah came yawning into the kitchen and poured herself a bowl of cereal and began eating with Emily. As they ate Emily shared her wonderful dream about Josh to Sarah.

“I’m telling you Emily, he totally likes you. Trust me, I know. You’re going to go home in a week and he’s going to tell you how much he missed you and how he truly feels about you” Sarah said excitedly to Emily.

“I promise you he’s not” Emily said as she got up and walked over to the sink to clean out her bowl.

“Well not if he hears how loud your diaper is” Sarah said, “jeeze I can’t believe you’re still in that, it’s gotta be soaked by how loud it is. Isn’t that so gross?” She said.

Emily stopped dead in her tracks and felt as if she was going to cry. She knew Sarah got super moody and said things she didn’t really mean when she was on her period, plus they didn’t get much sleep last night, but still that was without a doubt the meanest thing her cousin had ever said to her.

Seeing the look on her cousin’s face, Sarah immediately realized what she had said and tried to apologize. “I’m sorry cuz, you know I don’t mean that. I was making a joke, it just wasn’t funny.”

“It’s fine” Emily said, walking out of the room so her cousin wouldn’t see her start crying. She was already a diaper baby, she didn’t need to be a crying diaper baby. As she left the kitchen, she went upstairs, grabbed her clothes and a towel and headed to the bathroom to change and shower. She usually just threw away her Goodnite in her cousin’s bathroom trash, but after what Sarah had just said, she didn’t want her cousin to come into the bathroom later and see the soaking Goodnite, so she decided to take it out the outside trashcans where no one would see it. After taking a shower and putting on her clothes, she walked out the backdoor and around the side of the house to the trashcan to throw away her pullup. As she watched closer to the trashcans she began to smell an increased scent of smoke which she felt was odd since had seen her mom and aunt in the kitchen. As she turned the corner of the house she was shocked to see her cousins standing by the trashcans smoking!

“Oh Emily” Sarah said shyly looking down at the cigarette in her hand as she saw her cousin turn the corner.

“Don’t worry, I won’t tell your mom” Emily quickly said, too surprised at her cousins smoking to think of anything else to say.

“Our mom already knows we smoke, we smoke with her all time” Susie said, embarrassed like Sarah.

“Then why are you guys hiding out by the trashcans to smoke?” Emily asked confused.

“Well, umm, we didn’t want you to see Emily,” Sarah said awkwardly “we just, you know, you’re our little cousin, we don’t want to let you down.”

“I’m not a baby! I’m sixteen. You don’t have to hide things from me!” Emily said angrily, though seeing the irony that she was claiming not to be a baby, while holding a bag with her wet Goodnite in it. “Did it ever even cross your mind that maybe I’ve smoked too? That I could be old enough to have decided to try smoking as well? Or did you just think I’m too little to even know what a cigarette is?” Of course Emily had never smoked before, though in an attempt to take a stand and prove she was just as old and mature as them, she was willing to say anything.

“Well, have you smoked?” Susie asked.

“No, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t thought about it. I’ve seen your mom and my mom smoking and always wondered what it would be like, they seem so happy every time.” Emily said. This was actually true. Though Emily found smoking gross, she had always seen the joy her mom and aunt had smoking and wondered what it would be like.

“Do you want to try?” Sarah said extending her cigarette toward Emily.

After pausing for a moment, Emily looked down, grabbed the cigarette and confidently said “yes.” As she grabbed the cigarette, both Sarah and Susie looked surprisingly at her, though there was also a sense of acceptance in their looks. Though Emily was equally as surprised in her willingness to try smoking, her outside was confident. Emily was proving to her cousins she was an adult. This obsession of Emily to prove herself as an adult had always been an innocent one, but in this moment it all changed. For the first time, it became unhealthy, where Emily was willing to disregard what she believed in and how she felt about smoking, to prove to her cousins, people that loved her, that she was something different. The current image of Emily perfectly represented the inner struggle she faced over the past couple of years. In one hand, she held a bag with a soaking Goodnite inside, a symbol of how she felt others viewed her, and in the other she held a cigarette, a symbol of what she is willing to do to prove to others and herself that she isn’t a baby.

Emily stared down at the cigarette for a moment, and then slowly brought it toward her mouth, her hand shaking slightly. She brought it to her lips, and took a tiny breath in, pulling some smoke down into her lungs which she immediately coughed up. Emily grimaced at the initial taste while her cousins laughed at her coughing.

Emily started to hand the cigarette back to Sarah, but she didn’t take it, instead she said “try again, it gets easier I promise” and grabbed the pack of cigarettes sitting on top of the trashcan next to her, and lit a new one for herself.

Emily to another equally small drag, and coughed forceful again. After a couple more manageable drags with little or no coughing, Emily began to feel light headed.

“Woah, I’m feeling really weird right now” Emily said.

“Ya, that happens in the beginning” Sarah said. “Here I’ll put it out for you” she continued as she reached out and grabbed the cigarette from Emily and put both Emily’s and her own out.

They stood there for a moment, as Emily began to feel like her normal sense. Noticing how easily her two cousins smoked, Emily began curious, “how much do you guys smoke?” she asked them.

“Not much” Sarah said, “We probably smoke between 1-3 a day.”

“Are you addicted?” Emily asked.

“Ummm, I guess” Susie said, “I mean not really. Like I wanted to smoke this morning, but I didn’t need to if that makes sense. I’m happier if I do, but won’t die if I don’t.”

“Oh okay,” Emily said “please don’t tell my mom though, I don’t want this to be a think, okay?”

“Of course” Sarah and Susie both said.

The girls all began to head back inside, but then Emily remembered why she came out in the first place and turned around and threw away her Goodnite. As they walked inside, Emily tried to stay as far away from her mom as possible, trying to prevent her mom from smelling her smoke. Sarah noticing what Emily was doing leaned in and whispered, “don’t worry, she has been smoking this morning so she won’t be able to smell it on you, she’ll just think it’s her.”

The girls headed upstairs to get ready for the day. Emily self-conscious of her smell decided to shower again and then brush her teeth multiple times. Soon she was satisfied she was clean and headed downstairs to see what her family had planned for Christmas Eve.
