Growing Up is Harder Than It Looks – Chapter One.

“Thank you Mrs. Jacobson!” Emily Stewart shouted as she entered the house. Emily could smell the aroma of garlic bread cooking in the oven as she walked down the hall toward the kitchen.

“Hey sweetie” her mom said while stirring the pasta sauce as Emily entered into the kitchen. “How was practice?”

“It was fine, but Makayla’s mom was late picking us up again, so we had to sit in the dark, freezing park alone for 15 minutes, I know you said you wanted to wait until I’ve had my license for longer before I start driving other people, but please could you just make an exception and let me drive Makayla and myself to practice. It would be way easier on you and Mrs. Jacobson” Emily pleaded with her mother knowing more than likely this conversation was not going to end in her favor. Emily was a newly licensed junior in high school seeking the independence she felt she deserved and being allowed to drive other people would be a huge step forward for her. Despite being slightly babied by her mom, more than likely due to the fact she was the only child to a single mom, Emily saw herself as an adult and wished other people would do the same.

“Emily” her mom said letting out a long sigh, “I really just want you to wait a little longer before you start driving other people. You’ve only had your license for a month now. I would feel more comfortable if you had a little more experience on the road before you starting driving other people.”

“How am I supposed to get more experience driving if you’re always the one driving me?” Emily replied, slightly annoyed her mom didn’t trust her enough behind the wheel.

“I know it is frustrating, but please Emily be patient with me. It is not that I don’t trust you, or Makayla, I do trust you guys. I just know you two can be a little silly together, and I am afraid you could get distracted. Once you have a little more experience driving on your own, I will let you start driving Makayla. I love you and Makayla more than anything, you’re all I have in this world, and Makayla is basically my second daughter with all the time she spends over here, I just can’t imagine what it would be like if anything happened to you guys” her mom said, going over and putting her hand on her daughter’s shoulder.

Initially, Emily was a little upset by the way her mom described her and Makayla as “silly”, it just sounded so childish. But after everything else her mom said, she couldn’t help but drop it. She knew her mom was just looking out for her, and like her mom said, after her deadbeat dad walked out on them, they were basically all each other had.

“Okay I understand mom” Emily said “anything I can do to help you with dinner?”

“No I think I got it covered” her mom replied. “It is going to be another 15 or so minutes until its ready though, so why don’t you go shower real quick, you stink” her mom said laughing.

With that, Emily dropped her soccer bag off in the garage and then headed upstairs to the bathroom. Before hoping in the shower, she stopped by the mirror to examine the big scrap she got under her arm at practice. One of the girls on her team accidently tripped her during a drill and Emily landed straight on her arm. Emily looked at the oozing wound for a second, until she was too grossed out to look anymore. Emily continued to stand there and looked at herself for a moment. Despite being covered in dirt and sweat, Emily was an extremely attractive girl. She had a cute face with blue-green eyes and long bleach blond hair that was currently up in a ponytail for practice. However, while Emily stared into the mirror, she didn’t see the things that made her beautiful, she could only noticed what she thought was her biggest “fault”. While Emily was an extremely cute girl, a lot of that cuteness came from the fact that she looked more like a twelve year old than a sixteen year old. She had big chubby cheeks that gave her a baby face and even her body seemed to forget she was sixteen as she wasn’t as developed as some of her friends making her feel even younger. Her looks were a major part in why she tried so hard to be seen as an adult as she was tired of people always thinking she was younger. After a few seconds Emily stopped turned around and got in the shower. After completely scrubbing herself down, she got out of the shower, but on her PJs and headed down stairs just as her mom started to call up that dinner was ready.
Pasta and garlic bread was Emily’s favorite meal, partly because her mom was a pretty bad cook overall but not even her mom could mess up pasta and garlic bread. They both served themselves and sat down at the table and began chatting about their days.

“Did you see Josh today?” Her mom asked.

“Umm ya I talked to him for a little bit today” Emily said, blushing a bit. Emily secretly had a huge crush on Josh, who moved in next door to them this year and was a year older than Emily. Josh moved in a month before school started and didn’t know anyone so he and Emily hung out a lot over the last month of summer, but as he began school and started making friends in his grade she didn’t see him as much anymore. Though they still texted almost every day, Emily missed hanging out every day with him.

“You reminded him we’re leaving tomorrow right?” Her mom continued.

“Yep, he remembers” Emily replied.

“Okay great” said her mom

Josh was going to bring in the mail, check on the cats, and feed Emily’s fish, while Emily and her mom went and stayed at her mom’s sister’s house for Christmas and New Year’s. Usually Makayla did this for them, but her family was going away as well, so a few weeks ago when Josh was over at their house, Emily’s mom asked if he would do it. Emily’s mom and her sister, Karen, are twins and were best friends growing. Aunt Karen was also divorced and had two daughters, Sarah and Susie who were 18 and 17, so the five of them got together almost every holiday. Having basically grown up together, Emily was extremely close to Sarah and Susie, and though they were only two and one year older than her, she sort of looked up to them. Besides Makayla, they were probably her best friends, so as much as her mom liked getting together with her sister Karen, Emily was just as excited to see Sarah and Susie. The only downfall was it was about a 9 hour drive from their house in San Diego to Aunt Karen’s house in San Francisco which meant leaving early in the morning.

“What time are we leaving tomorrow?” Emily asked as they were finishing up dinner.

“I want to leave by 6 am” her mom said. “Don’t look so upset” her mom said after seeing Emily’s face when she said 6 am “you’re going to sleep, I’m the one who has to drive that early. We are going to be there for almost two weeks, so make sure you pack everything you need, but remember I will do laundry while we are there so you don’t need to bring everything you own.”

“Thanks mom, I think I got it” Emily said as she already had a list in her head of everything she was going to bring.

“And don’t forget to pack a bag for the car” her mom said as she started doing the dished.

“Thanks” Emily said as she got up and started helping her mom.

Soon the two girls finished the dishes and her mom headed up to bed so she would be well rested for the drive tomorrow, while Emily headed upstairs to begin packing for their trip.
