Growing Up is Harder Than It Looks – Chapter Two

Growing Up is Harder Than It Looks – Chapter Two.

Emily entered her room and headed over to her closet to get out her suitcase. As she pulled it out she began to go through the list of everything she needed: shirts, pants, underwear, bras, socks, PJs, her toothbrush, toothpaste, makeup, brush, and last but probably most important, her Goodnites. She went over to her dresser and opened up the bottom drawer and pulled out her Goodnites which to her displeasure only had a few left. She pulled out three of them, put one on her bed for tonight, one on her desk for tomorrow morning so she could sleep in the car, and then one in her backpack just in case for the car ride tomorrow. She then put the rest in her bag under some of the clothes she had just put into her suitcase. While Sarah and Susie both new she had accidents at night, every time she was with them, she still tried her best to hide it. Despite being so close in age to them, it was always clear that she was younger, and she didn’t want her bedwetting to make it any more obvious.

Emily went through her list of things she needed to bring one more time in her head and once she was satisfied that everything was in there, closed up her suitcase and decided it was time to go to sleep. Though it was only 10:30, she was hoping to get to drive some of the way tomorrow so she wanted to be well rested. Plus if she slept in the car she knew she would wet and she prefer if she didn’t have to wake up to a wet Goodnite in the car where she couldn’t change right away. She sort of liked the feel of a dry Goodnite, they were much softer than her normal underwear, but she hated the feel of a wet Goodnite. So Emily walked over to her bed, grabbed the Goodnite she had laid out, put it on, and then slide back up her pajama pants and got into bed. It took her a while to fall asleep as her body wasn’t used to going to bed so early but soon Emily drifted into a deep sleep, dreaming about everything she was going to do over the next week with her cousins.

All too soon, Emily’s sleep was rudely interrupted by the sound of her alarm clock. Emily, barely able to open her eyes shut of her alarm and groggily got out of bed. It was 5:50 and her mom wanted to leave in 10 minutes. Emily stood up, slide down her pajama pants, pushed down her very full Goodnite, and grabbed the fresh one she had placed on her desk last night and put it on. She then grabbed her suitcase, pillow, and blanket and headed toward the car. She placed her bag in the trunk, and then snuggled up in the passenger seat and drifted back to sleep just as her mom began to pull the car out of the driveway and their road trip had begun.

A few hours later, Emily began to drift out of her sleep. She did a quick stretch in which the movement made her very aware of the extra weight between her legs. Emily looked at her phone and saw it was already almost ten, but more importantly she had a message from Josh that said “Thought you might need someone to entertain you on your long trip” Emily couldn’t help but smile when she read the message. She quickly responded that some company would be very nice! As they began to text, Emily’s mom noticed Emily had awaken, and was squirming a bit which her mom knew meant Emily had had an accident and couldn’t get comfortable.

“Why don’t we stop for some breakfast? Emily’s mom said. “Are you hungry?”

“Sure that would be great!” Emily said eager to stop so she could change, and as she continued to wake up more she did realize she was quite hungry too.

A few exits up, Emily’s mom saw an IHOP from the freeway and decided that would be the perfect place to stop. As they parked the car and got out Emily realized she had forgotten her backpack in her room with the extra Goodnite in it. It wasn’t a big deal since Emily could just grab a Goodnite from her suitcase, but Emily liked having the backpack because they she didn’t have to walk through the restaurant to the bathroom trying to hide her pull-up from everyone. Emily walked over to the trunk, opened it up, grabbed out the second to last Goodnite from her pack, and grabbed a pair of shorts. She hid the Goodnite inside the shorts and they both headed toward the restaurant.

“Hey mom” Emily said sort of shyly as they were walking, “I only have one Goodnite left, would it be possible for us to stop before we get to Aunt Karen’s house and get a new pack, I really don’t want to have to go buy some when we’re with them.”

“Of course honey, that is not a problem” her mom replied. She knew bedwetting was not an easy thing to deal with, especially for someone trying to assert themselves as an adult, but she was always proud of how her daughter handled it. “There is a Wallmart right across the street, we can stop as soon as we are done eating.”

“Thanks mom!” Emily said as they entered the IHOP and she headed straight for the bathroom while her mom got the table. Inside the bathroom, Emily headed straight for the stall. To her disappointment there was someone in the other stall right next her. Emily dreaded changing when there was someone else in the bathroom as she thought the other person would clearly hear the sound of her diaper and think she was weird. Emily stood in the stall for a minute until the person left and then quickly changed before someone else came in. However, just as Emily was leaving the stall with her used Goodnite in hand, two girls about her age walked in. For a moment Emily froze and blushed just standing there staring at the two girls. However, the two girls paid no attention to Emily as they were in deep conversation about some boy from their school and never even noticed what Emily was holding. Realizing they didn’t notice her, Emily walked to the trashcan as fast as she could, threw away the Goodnite, washed her hands and left the bathroom. When Emily got back to the table she was still slightly red and her mom could tell something was up and asked her what happened. When Emily told her mom the story they both started to laugh. It is amazing how you can think something is so obvious and everyone notices what you are doing and are judging you. While in reality most people are too preoccupied with their own lives to even notice, and few care even if they do notice.

After they each wolfed down a bunch of pancakes, they paid the bill, went to the bathroom, and got back into the car. However, before they could continue on their journey, they first had to stop across the street at Wallmart. As they walked into Wallmart, they headed over to the baby section. Emily absolutely hated the fact that the Goodnites were in the baby section. I mean it is perfectly logical to put them there, but it always hurt her psyche a bit to walk past strollers, and cribs, to get to her Goodnites as if the store was sending her a message that she was still a baby. Eventually they made it down the long diaper isle to end where the training pants and bedwetting supplies were. Emily quickly scanned the row of training pants until she honed in on the all too familiar Girls L/XL Goodnites. Emily grabbed the pack and started speed walking toward the register to avoid having to been in public holding the Goodnites any longer than she had to. Unfortunately for Emily, it was December 23rd and Wallmart was filled with last minute shoppers trying to get that last gift which not only meant there were more people around for her to try to avoid seeing what she was holding, but also, the lines at each register were huge. Emily entered what seemed to be the shortest line, yet there was still 8 or 9 people in front of her. Checking out was Emily’s least favorite part of having to buy Goodnites. Not only was she forced to stand there holding the Goodnites while everyone in line could see, but she always felt like the cashier judged her a little bit when they rang it up. Eventually the torture of waiting there was over, as they reached the front of the line and her mom paid and they left.

Emily’s mom knew how embarrassed Emily got when she was there when they had to get Goodnites, and usually she tried to buy them without her there to allow her daughter to avoid some embarrassment. “Do you want to drive?” Emily’s mom asked trying to help her daughter not feel like such a little girl.

“Sure!” Emily enthusiastically shouted as she grabbed the keys from her mom and headed.

As they got in the car Emily’s mom began instructing her daughter, “Just drive slowly we are in no rush, be very careful when changing lanes, and make sure to plan ahead if you want to stop driving. We’re about to enter a stretch of highway where the exits are about thirty miles apart, so if you start to feel tired or don’t want to drive anymore, make sure to get off as soon as you feel like it, otherwise you might be stuck driving for another thirty minutes.”

“Got it mom! I’ll be fine!” Emily said excited to get the chance to drive. However, the excitement of driving wore off quickly as the boredom of driving straight on the freeway set in. Driving always made Emily so tired, ever since she was a baby Emily has pretty much always fallen asleep in the car wherever she went somewhere and after about only thirty minutes of driving Emily could feel her eyes starting to get heavy. However, wanting to prove to her mom that she was a good driver, she didn’t want to stop. About five minutes later, Emily saw a sign for an exit in ¾ of a mile that said last stop for 48 miles. Emily initially hesitated, but decided to keep going as the thought of being able to drive her and Makayla to practice set in. She felt like if she did a good job driving now, her mom would have full confidence in her driving and let her drive anywhere. With each passing mile Emily could feel her eyelids getting heavier and heavier until she could barely keep them open any longer. Her mom began to notice this and when they finally reached the next exit, they both agreed it was time for her mom to take over driving.

As Emily got into the passenger seat she noticed it was already almost one, meaning not counting their hour half stop at breakfast and Wallmart, they had been driving for almost five and half hours. Only a few more hours to go Emily thought as she drifted off into sleep almost as soon as she sat down in the passenger seat. The deceleration of the car woke Emily up a few hours later and she looked out the window to see they were getting off the freeway. As she sat up in her seat she noticed that like always, she had wet while she was sleeping.

“Hey mom” Emily said in that embarrassed voice she always used whenever she had to talk about anything related to her bedwetting. “Do you mind if we stop somewhere real quick. I know we are only like five minute from Aunt Karen’s house, but I would prefer not to arrive, umm, wet.”

“Sure honey” her mom said understandingly. “I actually need to stop and get something real quick so we can stop at the gas station up there.”

Though her mom didn’t say what she needed to get, Emily already knew what she was getting, a pack of cigarettes. Emily’s mom and her sister starting smoking together when they were 16 and smoked for years together. However, when Emily’s mom got pregnant with Emily, she quit. Yet whenever she got together with her sister, she would still have a cigarette or two. Emily was glad her mom quit smoking. Though it was clear her mom really enjoyed smoking, you could see it on her face when she smoked with her sister, Emily thought smoking was really gross. Her aunt smoked about a pack and half a day and always reeked of smoke. It seemed like every time you looked over, her aunt was having a cigarette. She always appreciated that her mom gave up something she enjoyed for her, so she didn’t mind that her mom would smoke a little with her sister. It was something they had done together for almost thirty-five years, a special bond between them that Emily would never really fully understand.

As they pulled into the gas station, Emily walked around to the trunk of the car and grabbed a pair of underwear out of her suitcase and then followed her mom inside.

“Hello” Emily’s mom said cheerfully to the cashier as they walked in and she approached the counter. “Could I please have a pack a Marlboro menthol lights and a lighter, and could she please have the key to the bathroom?”

“Of course” the cashier said, first handing Emily the key, and then turning around to get her mom the cigarettes and lighter.

Emily entered the gross gas station bathroom, and slide down her shorts, trying to let them touch the filthy ground as little as possible. She then tore away the sides of her Goodnite, put the soaked thing in the trashcan next her, and wet a paper towel to clean herself up a little bit down there. She realized she had been sitting in a pee filled diaper basically since she went to bed last night, with a few dry hours in between and felt almost as gross as the bathroom. When she decided she had wiped as much of the urine away as possible she grabbed another paper towel and dried herself. Emily hoped she would be able to shower when she gets to her aunt’s house, but for now that will have to do. Then she grabbed her underwear out of the pocket of her shorts put them on, and then put on her shorts. As she left the bathroom, returned the key, and headed out to the car she discovered her mom standing by the car already smoking one of the cigarettes form her new pack. Emily stood there a little shocked, of course she knew her mom was going to smoke the cigarettes, that is why she bought them, but she had never seen her mom smoke without her sister there. Soon her mom finished the cigarette, and they got in the car and headed down the street to her sister’s house.
