10589 to Gatestown – Chapter Four
Christopher watched from the train car as mountainous scenery that seemed to stretch on forever zipped past the glass pane he stared through. Ever so gently, the train car rocked side to side as faint traces of wispy and puffy smoke hovered around the outside of the car.
“What’cha thinking about?” The familiar yet distant voice gently speaking broke Christopher from his trance, and upon glancing over, he found Michael taking a seat on the chair facing him. “Must be something heavy from the looks of it.”
“I’m just wondering why.” Christopher began softly. As he did, Michael laced his paws together and leaned forwards slightly. “I used to think that everything happened for a reason, but after the accident, I just can’t see the reason why I lived when mom and dad didn’t. I mean, you know, what real purpose do I have – especially having this perma-limp that’s really limiting a lot of stuff I could be doing. And then these things that keep happening when I sleep. I swear it feels like I’m actually leaving one plane of existence and traveling to another; and when that’s not happening, I’m seeing all these vivid images of death and destruction.”
“Do you feel like you need to see someone? A professional?” Michael asked in a gentler tone of voice while watching his younger brother with softening eyes.
“What I need is to be normal!” Christopher countered, his words ending in a harsh stinging snap. Then he shook his head with a roll of his eyes and stood up. “I’m gonna use the bathroom.”
Michael watched as Christopher lumbered to the opposite side of the train car and into a small restroom marked with a simple man and woman stick figure sticker in pale blue. Suddenly Michael felt an odd twinge. For a brief moment, he had the strangest feeling of having lived that exact moment before yet he knew it was the first time he had supervised a tour group with his brother around. No matter how hard he tried to shake the sensation, it remained in the back of his mind refusing to leave.

Christopher emerged from the restroom then stepped back across the train car only to find Michael wasn’t where he was a few moments before. Thinking nothing of it, he slowly began a limping trek towards the opposite end of the car where he instantly paused and looked around to find a younger couple sitting and watching the scenery. On the other side of the car, two older men with thinning gray fur played a card game. Normally he wouldn’t have given them a second thought but something about the small group of four struck him as curious; they weren’t dressed in clothing he was used to seeing, instead, the men – a bear, wolf and a skunk wore business style suits while the woman – a smaller panda wore an older style dress.
“Excuse me.” The panda raised her paw catching Christopher’s attention. “Are we on schedule?”
“What?” Christopher asked with his right eyebrow arching upwards.
“Are we on time to Gatestown?” The skunk accompanying the panda smiled.
“Um yeah I guess.” Christopher shrugged after giving the golden pocket watch a quick glance.
“Well its about time you showed up, Christopher.” The bear grumbled not taking his eyes off his the cards in his massive paws.
“What he means…” The wolf continued. “…is that we’ve been waiting a long time for you to come along.”
“Wait what!?!” Christopher stammered and shook his head. At this, the group of four glanced to each other and smiled then went back to their own activities.

-BAM! BAM! BAM!-
“Chris! Open this door!” Michael bellowed while rapping a fisted paw against the simple wood door separating the on-board restroom from the rest of the train car.
“Fine have it your way.” He lowered his tone while reaching into his pocket to retrieve a set of keys, then he rummaged through the set until he found the one he needed. Within seconds, Michael slid a square shank key into a square slot in the door just below the handle and gave it a good twist until the door slid open revealing a small bathroom with a form-fitted toiled, folding sink and nothing else. “How the…!?!” He stammered, searching behind the sliding door and through every square inch of the space. Yet, to his utter shock, nothing was out of place; all the wall and ceiling panels were as they should be, still, there was no sign of Christopher.
