10589 to Gatestown – Chapter Two
A small black pickup truck slowed to a gentle yet screeching stop in the driveway of a modest two story brick home. As he turned off the engine with a gray handpaw, Michael Velstein sighed, his mind heavy with thousands of thoughts. It wasn’t until he lifted a pair of neon green sunglasses from his tan eyes to set the shades on top of his head that he took his eyes off the brick wall in front of the truck.
“I still don’t understand how you can get suspended on the last day of school!” Michael spoke softly yet with a defined grunt. “Haven’t I taught you better than that!?!” Slowly, Michael moved his eyes from the cars dashboard to the younger koala sitting in the passenger seat.
“Its not my fault.” The boy cornered staring Michael eye to eye. “Troy was asking for it! He started roughing me up, what was I supposed to do, just let him get away with it?”
“You should have walked away from it!” Michael raised his voice. “And now, Christopher, I lost a few hours of work on this paycheck because I had to leave work to go to your school and have a lovely little chat with your principal. You may not think its much, but we need every cent I can get!” Following this, Michael opened the drivers door and slid out of the truck causing Christopher to do the same with the passenger door. The two remained silent as Michael walked and Christopher limped a few feet towards the houses front door where Michael paused long enough to retrieve a pair of keys from his pocket, once in his furry handpaw, he opened the door to hear its familiar squeak. “Cellphone.” He held a paw out towards Christopher.
“Whatever.” The younger grumbled and drew from the pockets of his black jeans a touch screen phone which he promptly handed over.
After entering into a blue carpeted living room lined with basic furniture, Michael turned to Christopher with a low beaming glare intense enough to pierce through metal. “Why?” He asked still staring down his brother. “Why is it your mission to make things difficult for both of us? I mean, today you were fighting someone in school, two weeks ago you snuck out in the middle of the night and were brought home in the back of a squad car. And the month before that you were caught dumping itching powder in the football teams uniforms. I don’t get it I really don’t!”
“You never will.” Christopher scowled, his face tensing up.
“Then tell me.” Michael sighed, his tone turning softer as his expression warmed. “Is it because I have to work all the time? Are you getting enough attention? Is there something you need help with? What?”
“Its just…” Christopher began but then abruptly stopped. “Never mind. I know the routine; go to my room.”
“We’ll talk about this after dinner.” Michael sighed and watched as Christopher limped over to a set of wooden stairs on the right side of the home. After seeing his brother stomping up the steps, Michael sighed and shook his head with a defined frown then turned and headed into the kitchen along the left side of the living room. Once in the tiled kitchen, he went to the far wall where a tan panel sat in the wall; without thought of doing so, he opened the panel revealing a breaker box neatly labeled – each room had a breaker for the overhead lights and one breaker for the wall outlets. “Kitchen…bathroom one…bathroom two…” He mumbled as he went down the list of labels until he found the one he needed. With a simple ‘click’ from the breaker his idea was over.
That should keep the light on but not let him play any games. He thought to himself as he double checked to make sure the outlet-breaker for Christopher’s room was turned off.

Michael and Christopher sat across from each other at a modest sized dining table in the kitchen. Even though there was the occasional ‘clank’ of silverware, a silence hung between them that was thick enough to cut with a knife. It wasn’t until Michael took a swig of water from his glass that he finally spoke up.
I’ve been doing some thinking.” He mentioned in gentle tones while pausing to watch his brother glancing up in the middle of chewing on a chicken wing coated in barbecue sauce. “My boss called while I was making dinner, and I think there’s a way I can keep an eye on you all summer without having to burden grandma ’cause she’s getting older.”
Hearing this, Christopher swallowed a mouthful of meat. “What, you getting a babysitter or something?”
“No, no no.” Michael chuckled, an honest smile creeping across his lips under a black rounded nose. “You’re coming with me to work.”
“What!?!”
“You’re going to be volunteering all summer at the railroad museum. It’ll also look good on your college applications.”
“You can’t! You won’t!” Christopher stammered, his eyes turning large.
“I can, and I have.” Michael smirked. “Its about time you started preparing for the future and what better way than with hands on work experience.”
“I won’t get paid for it either.”
Instantly Michael grinned. “Yes you will.”
“How? Volunteering means no pay…”
“You’ll see.”
