Survey of What’s to Come – Chapter One
Myname is Zack, but I spell it Z, A, K. I feel like it gives me a uniquestanding. I’m a Martian. “A red planet boy” some people would say. I’m aboutfive feet six give or take, dirty blonde hair with hazel eyes. My parents oncelived in the Restricted F Zones, but by law they couldn’t tell me about it.They decided to have me and left the RFZ. My mother said she wouldn’t have itany other way. I gave her what felt like the last kiss I would ever give her. Idid the same for my father, but with a hug. After a heartbreaking goodbye Iboarded the ship. After aboard the S.S. Giovanna I waited for my time to besurveyed. Like many others, I feel nervous and a little sick to my stomach. Ithought about just denying my future home, and going back to my current one,but my mother and father said there were moving back to the RFZ. If I got theright results I could be close to them with my own home. I was told we couldkeep contact while we’re apart. We even planned a special vacation for the nextsummer. We’re going to Escalades, a snow world. We plan on skiing. Thankfullymy room was private because I couldn’t help crying as the Giovanna took off.
SadlyI stayed in my pathetic state for about half the ride. After I cleaned myselfup I went to the mess hall for a little comfort food. I sat alone as I listenedto the many other different people as they ate.
“I’mso glad to out of there. The rents were too demanding” I heard one of thehardcore emo guys say.
“You think yours were bad. Mine would have had their way to keeping me at home” said a beefed up jock.
“Undeservingpunks” I thought to myself still feeling the pain of my loss. I guess splittingfrom my parents hurt more than I thought, because I didn’t end up eating verymuch. The knots in my stomach saw to that. I went back to my bed and tried torelax, and in no time I was asleep. A crew member had to come around to wake mewhen we were docking.
“Hon,we’re here” I think she could tell I was crying because of what she said next.“Don’t worry about the Survey, sweetie, things will be fine.”
Sheseemed rather nice for a, what I’m guessing was, thirty-year-old. She had
asweet caring voice, and even in her Giovanna uniform she had a nice figure. Ido like red heads, so that was a plus.
Sheushered me off the ship and to the nearest doctor. “Take care of this one. Heseems to be frazzled” The crew member stated as if I wasn’t there. She handedme my bags which for some reason she was carrying. I then followed the agingbalding man as he went on talking about what was going to happen.
“Idon’t know what rumors are going around, but the Survey isn’t as bad as theysay.” I was led to an apartment style room. “This will be your room whileyou’re here for the next week.”
“Aweek?!” I said back pedaling in my shock. “I thought this was only a few hours at the most”
“Well I’m afraid that isn’t how we do things here. The Survey needs to be thorough, and we can’t do that without time,” the doc explained as he began to leave.“We’ll call you when you’re needed, but till then, just relax” And with that Iwas left alone. I went to go unpack when I saw a board on the wall. The houserules, it read on as:
1: No contact with the outside world except the facility’s doctors.
2: Listen to what the doctors say
3: Keep clean (Others will use the room later)
4: Remember law 366 of the RFZcharter. No one is to speak of the survey process outside these walls underpenalty of exile
“Simple enough” I shrugged while I started unpacking again. It took me about half an hour, but it was done. I wasn’t feeling tired after the nap I had, so I thoughtI would find out more about the place I was at. I looked out the window and sawthe Jupiter’s giant red spot. “Reminds me of home” I said staring at the giantstorm.
“SoI’m on one of Jupiter’s moons” I sighed feeling lonely again. I decided to turn my attention to what was on galactic television. A few cartoons and good movieor two reminded me of home. Time I guess went by quickly, because before I knewit. It was dinnertime.
There wasn’t a cook this time around, so I had to cook for myself. My mom taught me afew things when it came to cooking, but not a lot it would seem. I burned myfirst attempt. The second was still frozen in the middle, but by the third Igave up. Instead I made a light dinner from dehydrated food supplies. As I waschoking it down there was a knock on my door.
It was that red headed crew member from earlier. This time she was wearing scrubs. This made me curious, but I didn’t bother questioning it, and I figured she wasoff duty from the Giovanna. She still looked good to boot. I didn’t sayanything as she walked inside. “Hey it’s you, hon. Well anyways we were hearing that there was a burning smell coming from here.” I tried to hide my failed efforts.
“YeahI can’t cook to well.” I admitted.
Shemust have seen this because she said “I can see that. What are you eating right now, then?” I nervously showed her my poorly successful meal. “You can’t eatthat,” she quickly took it and throw it away. “I’ll make you something. My nameis Rose by the way.” Rose gave me a sweet smile before she started cooking.
”Thanks Rose, it means a…”
“Stop right there. Its Miss Rose, remember your manner honey. I’m guessing your momand dad wouldn’t like you to forgetting something so important.” She said with authority.
“Noof course not Miss Rose, my mom would be very mad if I did” I replied headdown. The subject jumped right back to where she left off.
“Fromwhat I could see you really can’t cook, so I’m going to put in a request to see that this room isn’t burned down. Meaning I will be cooking for you from nowon.” I was confused by this turn of events.
“ButI thought you work on the Giovanna”
She shook her head “No I work here watching over the health and care of the peoplein the facility. By the way are you going to tell me your name or do you justlike pet names?”
Iwas blushing again. “I’m sorry Miss Rose, my name is Zak”
“Nota problem Zak” She then ushered me out of the room. “Dinner will be ready in aminute”
Ikilled the time by watching a movie. “Zak, honey, dinner’s ready” I heard Miss Rose call. After I made my way to the table, Miss Rose set down my plate.“Sweet peas, mash potatoes, and a piece of steamed chicken” She said happilyeating her own.
“Not to be rude, Miss Rose” I asked, “but why are you eating with me? I wouldn’t think you would want to spend your dinner time with me.”
Miss Rose laughed at what I said, but replied “Zak, I would be eating alone in my office otherwise, so you’re nice company.” Miss Rose’s comments made me blush again. I never really had much in the way of friends. Yes there was a common grounds group, but they weren’t much in the way of friends. I smiled back as a way to show my thanks.
As we ate our meal Miss Rose asked me. “Are you still nervous?” Looking at myplate I answered back “Yeah, a little”
“Don’tbe, honey, these things are simple. It will be over and done within no time”She then took her empty plate to the sink. “And tell you what, honey. If youneed a little help getting through this, you can always call my line. It shouldbe next to your bed. I need you to wash the dishes since I cooked.” Not wantingto argue with her I agreed quickly.
“YesMiss Rose I could do that.”
“Good,I’ll be here in the morning at seven, so be awake, Zak.” I showed her out and said my goodbyes.
Little time was spent between the time Miss Rose left and when I started the dishes.
My apartment was luckily to have a molecular washer, so Ihad the work done in almost no time. I went to deal with my nightly routine, jet shower, a quantum level shave, and a nanobot mouth cleaning. After I wasfresh and clean again I went about getting ready for bed. After dressing in my pajamas I went to bed. There were a little juvenile, but I couldn’t use anyother ones. My mom made these for me. The lonely feeling cropped up again. I did my best to fight the pain, but it wasn’t enough. After what was probably afew minutes, I ended up crying myself slowly to sleep.
