Error While Sleeping – Chapter Two
The knight’s white stallion stumbled over the rocky surface of the broken ground. Vents blasted steam up through the air at random intervals. Sir Christophe was tired and the day was heavy and grey. It was also growing exceedingly hot as he angled his horse up the mountain pass that very few if any had gone before. The great black mountain had looked like he could just ride Pogo over to it in a few short hours…it had taken more than three weeks.
The horse was tired and Christophe was tired. There were no villages near here, no one came here, it was as far removed as one could get without falling off the world. Supplies were low and wouldn’t last, but they were enough if you had no intention of returning. Time seemed to slip by quickly as they worked their way up and up toward their journey’s end.
Christophe came upon a cavernous opening after rounding a bend on the rocky trail. A soft inviting glow came from within illuminating the walls in a radiant light. It wasn’t large enough to go through mounted but it appeared to go on for as far as he could see. Un-mounting and leading Pogo he began his walk down the long corridor. He knew as they went around one bend and another that the journey was almost over. Instead of the rush he usually felt before battle, he was starting to feel a sense of relief.
Christophe was done in more ways than he could count. He did not know what lay ahead but knew that it had to be better than what he had been through. If a quick death was in the cards he was ready and welcoming of it. The only thing that had kept him going all this time was the thought of one final grand adventure with a chance to see a magnificent creature before his swift demise in a gout of liquid hot fire breath.
He came to a great cavern and inside was a waterfall gently splashing into a clear pool of water. The glow that had led him this far seemed to come from this waterfall, or at least…perhaps from behind it.
He stepped over the edge and began to walk toward the falling water pulling his reluctant horse behind him. The water from the pool at first was only up to his calf but by the time he got to the cascading fall it was passing his breast plate and moving up to his neck.
Pogo had broken into a swim and quickly pulled Christophe behind him and through the falls. Once through his eyes went wide as he saw the beast was laying on the bank in front of him. It watched him approach with cat like eyes that glowed red. Christophe reached for his sword and pulled it free, the great dragon didn’t stir a muscle, just watched.
Holding the sword he had wielded since his youth high over his head he flung it as far from him and the waiting dragon as he could. It landed with a loud plop in the pool on the dragon side of the fall, well out of reach should he change his mind. This was it, he felt a great weight was lifted from him, even pogo began to move beside him toward the great dragon. Stepping up onto dry rock he had noticed the dragon’s eyes had changed to pink. He thought it odd as the great beast, moving for the first time, opened its mouth and began to take in a large volume of air.
