27 Reasons to Enjoy Light – Chapter Six

27 Reasons to Enjoy Light – Chapter Six

The weekend was a much needed break, as little of a break that it turned out to be. Just like during the weak Brandon was up and outside by 5 AM, dragging me outside with him. The week continued, Every morning was the same routine. Monday morning Brandon informed me that Friday after practice they discovered a lineman had taken a dump in one of the Ice baths, and no body would admit to it. I laughed just a little bit to hard, but Brandon really didn’t find it as funny, being he was the player who “found” it. Tuesday morning I made the discovery that I had ran out of beef noodles. I had completely forgot to restock over the weekend, and we found ourselves eating peanut better jelly bacon sandwiches for breakfast. To no surprise, we loved it, and agreed it was the breakfast of men. We had the same breakfast Wednesday , and that afternoon Ligh invited me over to meet her family Saturday. Thursday naturally went in slow motion, with the highlight of the day being a couple of receivers joining in on our morning routine.
The day could not have went any slower as I crashed on my bed after taking a shower. Brandon was already in bed asleep. I just finished forcing my self to appreciate a list of various tunes from the Romantic period. With the music still buzzing in my head I fell to sleep faster than my head could find the pillow.
I was completely out of it realizing that I had zombie’d my way to sitting at my desk eating a bacon sandwich.
“I don’t think these could ever get old” I said crunching down into the bacon skeleton.
“mmmmmrrrrrgh” Brandon in complete agreement.
“Jay and Slim are suppose to join us again” He said , referring to the same receivers.

“How’d you talk them into that?” I asked

“I didn’t they just asked me if it was cool” he said

“Wow, you guys are devoted” I said

“Some of us” he laughed, reaching for his worn out practice cletes.

I followed suit, sliding on my tennis shoes after finished the man sandwich. We started practicing the same drills. Entertaining myself I begin to pretend to actually be a quarter back, shuffling to the side as I hurled the ball just far enough in front of him to make him work for it. Two weeks ago I stood stiff as a statue, muttering cadence awkwardly waiting for Brandon to start his route, but today I felt the rush of adrenaline that I had come to love, as I got down to receive another”snap”.

Jay and Slim joined in much earlier than yesterday, the two of them would take turns running and defending each others route. Slim really stood no chance against Jay, who would always find a way to get open, or intercept the pass. I tried my best to put it on the money, but Jay always found a way to come out on top.

Even I started to feel short winded as the sun made its way over the horizon. Though I didn’t let it phase me, knowing I only had two classes today. Drenched in sweat, we called it quits as players begin to make their way to the gym from the dorm. I took a shower, and headed off to calculus, somehow still full of energy. The Professor, Gilman, quickly reminded me how sleepy I was, with his monotone lecture on the importance of understanding some theorem that some guy should have been murdered for making.
In music appreciation, the old man, Professor Wolgenburt lectured on the post-romantic era of music, and how impressionism started it’s rise. However he spent most of his time playing his piano or his ancient harp at every chance he got. He was really good, so good I could feel my head get heavy as he played his piano. Somehow he manage to keep it entertaining enough not to put me to sleep. Then randomly held down a note on the piano reaching over to his harp. He played another note on the piano, then plucked a cord towards the back of the harp. He let the chords fade, before speaking:

“That class is dissonance” he said

At first I didn’t catch it, but he played it again. I could tell something was different listening to it the second time, but I didn’t know what. He went on taking a class survey on who felt the dissonance in the cords, asking students to lift their hands. I was surprised by how many hands were not raised. I just knew Ligh could hear it, but noticed out of the corner of my eye her arm wasn’t raised. Instead she was crunched over on her desk with her head pressed down in her arm. Her other hand was on her stop watch in her lap, when I noticed her blue jeans. I could see the dark spot growing between her thighs, against her will as she tightly pressed her legs together. She shook her head in her arm, knowing that I was looking at her.

Watching her legs relaxed, the dark spot quickly made its way down her thighs. I could hear her begin to cry as she scooted the stop watch to the side of her pants, the time read 00:00. Was it broke, had she forgotten to press the start button? It didn’t make sense, she wouldn’t be crying over something like that.
Did she? I froze as the thought crossed me mind. There was no doubt about it, with the stopwatch still at zero. She had just had an accident with no prior warning.

“Young lady, there is no sleeping in here” The old man playfully hissed from the front of the room.

She didn’t move and now everyone had turned to look at her. The professor had begin walking towards her desk, now holding a cymbal in each hand. We only sat two rows back, and it took him no time to get to her desk, even in his old age. He said something about doing this in the syllabus, but knowing she wasn’t asleep I wasn’t sure what would happen next. He seemed like the kind of professor to kick a student out of the class room if they didn’t respond, and that would only make the situation worse. I shook my head no, over and over, as he position the cymbals near her head, but he ignored me and raised one of the cymbals above her desk.

“Don’t” I said almost yelling.

I startled the old man: “And why not, may I ask?” Not so playfull anymore.

“She has very sensitive hearing, she’s awake” I said, my face now red with embarrassment.

“If she were awake , she would of told me so” He scolded me.

But before he could continue with his plan, her hand moved out from under neath her face. You could see the moisture on her hand as she thumped the side of the cymbal, with out looking up. I heard a couple pens hit the floor. He stood looking at her, the bitterness in his face slowly faded, and he turned around walking back to the front of the class.

“Sensitive hearing indeed!” he exclaimed

I have do admit I was still clueless at this point.

“Who heard that” He asked, raising his own hand, refereeing to more then just the sound.

A few students raised their hands, as he walked over to the rooms thermostat, and twisted the dial. The room became silent. He then twisted the dial back. The air conditioner unit kicked back on. The humming sound filled the room once again, but I still wasn’t catching on.
“Outstanding” he said walking to the front of the class with a cymbal.

He held the cymbal out, and thumped it, but it didn’t make a noise. He waited and thumped it a few more times. Finally on the 5th or 6th try I could hear the small ringing sound of the cymbal.

“That class is a form of consonance!” He happily proclaimed.

Over excited by his new discovery he dismissed the class early. I walked to the front of the room and waited as the class emptied, finally only the 3 of us remained.

“I am truly sorry about that miss understanding. ” he said

“But, It’s a pleasure to meet you, I never thought I would live to see the day.” he added

Ligh and I both looked towards him.

“How do you know?” she asked, her face still stained by tears.

“You thumped my cymbal with out looking at it, making it harmonize with the air vent”
“And it’s clear that its not your autistic girft, or that boy would of said so in your defense”
“My great uncle changed his last name to Lesenod.”

“Need I say more? He asked turning away.

“No, sorry to hear that” Ligh said
“It’s not your fault” he said locking up his harp, avoiding eye contact.
“I will leave you two be, thanks again for that demonstration” He said

Grabbing his cane , and lifting his hand over his shoulder as he left the room.

“Come sit down loser” she instructed me.

“I have a list of things you need to go get me from my dorm” she continued.

“At your command my lady” I said sitting down in front of her with a smile.

“Sooo?” I asked

“Lesenod, was the family who did most of the research on our race” she said

“was?” I asked

“The last Lesenod was a female, her husband was drafted into Vietnam” she said

“That sad, I guess she never moved on?” I asked

looking me in the eye , she said in the most demanding voice I have ever heard in my life

“Never”

I felt my chest pound as I realized what I was getting myself into, I didn’t know what to say, or if I was ready to say anything at all.

“What all do you need from your room?” I asked , changing the subject

She stood up, completely soaked, and sat down on my lap. Kissing me, then asking

“It just started, will you come with me?” she asked twisting her dangeling stopwatch in the air.

“If I have to” I said , acting reluctant.

She pressed down harder on my lap, and let the stopwatch stop spinning as it dangled in my face.

“you have to” she said standing up.

I slid her stuff in my bag then grabbing her hands I walked behind her. Her pants being soaked, meant the stopwatch indicated a much scarier disaster, but it had been 2 minutes at most as we made our way out of the door. Her hippy-like shirt hung low enough to cover her crotch, but her backside was completely soaked beyond hiding. I wasn’t sure how I was going to hide her, let alone myself now that she had sat in my lap. She thought way ahead of me, as she stopped suddenly as someone walked pass. Before I could stop myself I ran into her, only to feel her arms pull my arms around her.

“Don’t move” she said smiling at me
“Why would I?” I asked, regaining my balance.

Finally coast was clear and we proceeded forwards, and I could really feel the dampness on my skin now. Taking the long way, we only had to stop a few times, as we made our way quickly around the campus. It only took about 10 minutes to make it to her hall. Standing on the outside, waiting for the coast to clear I could hear the hum of a small engine coming up beside us. It stopped next to us, we stepped awkwardly to face the blue and yellow golf cart. A guy stood up on the other side wearing a blue visor and whistle around his neck. He had no shirt on, but something told me he wasn’t a lifegaurd.

He walked around the front of the cart and held his his bear-like arm out to give me a handshake, thus revealing his very flashy sports watch. It had to be the most awkward hand shake I had ever given in my life , carefully leaning around Ligh as I shook his hand. I could tell he was puzzled, as I am sure he meant to say what ever he was about to say during the hand shake.

“DeLes?” “Parson’s room rate?” he asked?

“Yes sir” I answered, as he called me by my last name.
Ligh pinched my hand, but I couldn’t make the man go away any faster.

“Coach Reed” He said

“The legendary?” I couldn’t help but ask.

He chuckled “No sir, that was my father”

“But, I hear you have quite the arm on you.”

“It’s not that great, just enjoy helping Brandon and them out” I answered

“Well Brandon and those boys need this water” he said slapping the water jugs in the back of his kart

“But, if you ever need a job, you be sure to come help us out”

“We will call it work study, and the school will never know” He said getting back into the kart.

“Yes sir, will do” I answered standing their awkwardly.

Thankfully they drove off as I said it, all while Ligh pulled me towards the door. Quickly making our way down the hall, at this point ignoring a couple girls in the hallway. I don’t think they noticed, they were much to occupied by the hanging up sorority posters. She shut the door behind us, by pressing her but into my crotch, followed by my butt into the door. I could hear the shower running, as I felt Ligh’s hand squeeze tightly around mine.

“Who takes shower’s in the middle of the day!?” she said angrily.

“Your room mate I guess” I said

“My room mate is gone” she said , her bed now completely stripped.

“Oh wow she takes everything home with her” I said

“She got a new room, I’m listed as special needs now” She said, moving away from me.

“I’m sorry , what happened?” I asked pulling her back towards me

“She told me she couldn’t live over here anymore because she didn’t like our neighbors” she said , her voice wavering.

“But the R.A asked me to sign off on her report today, she wrote about how I was causing the room to smell bad, and she couldn’t study” her voice fading towards the end.

She pulled away, this time escaping with her fluid like body movements.

“So who is in the shower?” I asked

“We share our bathrooms with our neighbors” she said.

“21” she said looking at her stopwatch. I walked up behind her placing my hands on her hips as I got closer.

“27” I said , and pulled her against my chest.

“27” She whispered looking up at me.
