27 Reasons to Enjoy Light – Chapter One

27 Reasons to Enjoy Light – Chapter One

Startled by the clattering of pots and pans, I slowly begin to gain consciousness as I smell food cooking .. and thought to myself why are there pots and pans.(students don’t have stove in the dorm rooms.)

Leaning up, I look over towards the corner of the room, that acts as our kitchen with an oversized mini fridge and a small sink with 2 cabinets underneath. First thing I notice is that my room mate has an electronic heat pad for cooking and not only is frying eggs, but on the other pad boiling some ramen noodles, that I am pretty certain he got out of my survival box.

Noticing that I was looking his direction, he loudly states.

“Sure hope your hungry nerd, gotta fuel that noggin or I will have to get a new room mate”

“Oh yeah Beef Noodles and Eggs, cant beat that for breakfast”

“Better than going to the caf” he loudly responds, which I knew nothing about, being a freshman I had yet to actually go to the cafeteria, but I will take his word. He has probably been at the school all summer playing football.

I looked down and realized that it was a quarter till five and decided to lay my head back down while thinking to my self … Why is the baboon up so early?

“Hey chump, don’t fall back to sleep, or I will have to eat this myself”

“That’s fine” I said almost dozing back off, but before I could make it back to neverland, he threw a spoon at me, saying “I can’t eat all this, or I will never start unless I switch to right tackle”

It only took me about a second to long to realize it was the spoon he was using to stir the ramen noodles. I panicked trying to get away from the spoon before it could do any more damage, and being to sleepy to realize it was already cooled off, I found myself on the floor looking rather stupid, but fully awake. I stood up, grabbed the spoon and threw it in the sink, and in attempt to push the heavy atmosphere away from my clumsiness I asked “So what position do you play”

“Tight end, I think I told you last night?” he said in such a way to question if he had.

“Yeah you did, just forgot” I stated , while rubbing the back of my head, maybe my brain needed some friction to get it going.
“So why do you get up this early” I asked, remembering he didn’t have to go workout till 7:30

“Was just about to get to that” pausing for a moment

“I need to get faster, and train my hands, you mind helping?”

I hesitated at first, trying not to be rude..

“I am not that good at football, I played in high school, because it was kind of the thing to do, and never started, just was a back up receiver.” I said hoping it would save me from having to get up every morning at the crack of dawn. However that didn’t seem to change the question. He finished the last egg and drained the noodles and looked towards me, waiting for a response. I have to admit I am just not good at saying no.

“I guess but I cant really promise anything”

Before I knew it, I was outside in gym shorts, shouting out cadences and throwing him bullets that resembled dying ducks, he seemed okay with it, telling me that almost every pass gets interfered with before it gets to him, and that my awful spiral was perfect for practice. I wasn’t sure if he was just being nice, telling the truth, or maybe he was really just that happy to have a practice partner. In the end, even with him relentlessly asking if I was getting tired or sore, we kept going for quite awhile after sunrise.

“You sure your arm isn’t sore?” he asked as we walked into the building.

“Yeah man, don’t worry about it” I said as I moved my arm in a full rotation slowly, perpendicular to my torso, and right as I got to the highest point and was about to begin the rotation again, there was a loud pop, that completely caught him off guard.

Laughing a bit seeing him startle I explained “I am double jointed, so I have it pretty easy when it comes to that kind of stuff”

My “Your almost late” alarm sounded off on my cellphone, as I suddenly realized it was 7:30. Quickly I made my way to the shower when I stopped short realizing that Brandon had less time then myself. I asked him if he wanted to go before me, but as I said it, he walked pass me towards the hallway door.

“Wont do me any good, I still have to go work out” he said while opening and shutting the door behind him.
I only had 2 classes today, Calculus and Music appreciation. Calculus passed pretty quickly again with the syllabus but a little bit of math with the classes lasting longer on Tuesday than Monday, and on my way to the Music department I noticed “27” walking in the same direction, I was a bit ahead of her, so I slowed down and met her at the corner of the building she he just left, and it must have been my lucky day, because she was going to the same class as me, but as I looked around so was about 60 other freshman that I probably saw the day before. Bringing up the day before I completely forgot to ask for her name, and failed to realize that I had done so till right after the class was over, and she had already left the class room. I rushed to catch up, how far could she go, I was sitting right next to her, with there only being one exit to the building I knew I could catch her.

I left the building and looked both directions, and kinda stood on the steps of the building froze as the crowd around me moved out, with none of them who I was looking for, disappointingly I sighed and decided everyone had already left and that maybe I just missed her in the crowd. I probably stood their another minute trying to figure out why I wasn’t moving, then realized I had forgot my bag, I rushed back towards the class hoping no one had kid napped my expensive books, not thinking about my surroundings I cut the corner towards the class room, almost fast enough to be running, right as a student walked around the corner, and before I could stop, or move aside, I had completely knocked the poor girl over. I had to turn as white as a ghost after what I just done.. and then something caught my eye.

She laughed laying on the floor, and asked “Looking for this?”

Only then did I realize she was holding my backpack, I was to occupied looking where I shouldn’t of been, and I am glad she didn’t notice, because she probably would of never talked to me again, because it would of completely made me look like a pervert, and probably would of really embarrassed her in the process. She had an obvious wet spot on her underwear, which caught my attention in the first place, but it was probably from me almost knocking her out.

I reached down, and offered her a hand up, at the same time she realized the side of her skirt was underneath her, and she quickly grabbed my hand and pulled herself up, her face turning bright red in the process.

To change the subject for the speechless victim …

“I am so sorry, I forgot my bag and was rushing back to get it.”

“Its alright” she said sheepishly while looking down, I had to come up with a way to indirectly convince her I knew nothing about her incident.

“So uh.. I am Joan, and you?”

“Ligh” she said looking down, still.

“Huh, no really it is” I said in a questioning voice.

“Everyone says that” she says and began walking away.

Then it hit me.. her name was lie.. or sounded like lie.

“Wait , I am sorry” I said and rushed next to her.

“Your name , is it Lie?” I asked

I don’t know if I have ever seen some one smile as large as she smiled, and I am not sure if she was laughing at me, or just that happy I got her name right. One thing was certain, after today, any confidence that I had in understanding other people, for whatever reason it may be, was completely gone.

“Yeah” She said, not losing the smile while making eye contact, then she poked me right in the center of my forehead, and said

“27”

Giggled, and skipped away.

Leaving me completely speechless.
