From Hot to Cold – Chapter Two
The weather was better today and as Michael put his plate in the dishwasher he thought about meeting up with his friends. He arranged to go to the local cinema to see the latest generic action film and enjoyed the day for the most part. He kept thinking about wetting the bed and when his friends asked if he was okay he shrugged it off. The friends played some pranks at the fountains in the centre of town and splashed each other with the water. Michael and his friends had some burgers and played a few games of pool before going their separate ways. When Michael arrived home his mum was already going to bed and he soon followed suit.
When Michael was ready for bed he noticed the fresh sheets and he would normally have enjoyed these. This time however it reminded him of the accident he had during the previous night and he tossed and turned thinking about it. He did eventually drift into dreamland and as with the previous night the sandman brought him dreams. This time around Michael’s dream was set in a water park and he was with his sister and mum. His sister, Eliza, was visiting from university and they were all having a wonderful time in the water. They shot down the flumes and whirled in the whirlpool. They had races in the swimming lanes and Michael showed off by performing cannonballs. Afterwards, they enjoyed their journey home singing old family favourites in the car. It was raining and Michael watched as the drops blew passed and were swept away by the wipers. The dream came to an end as they all arrived home.
Michael was sleeping very deeply when his mum came in to get him up. Normally he would get up early, for a teenager at least, but it was quarter to twelve. His mum had already called him twice but had no response from Michael as he slept. She slowly tapped him on the shoulder and under her breath calmly woke her son.
“Michael, darling, its very late and you are missing a lovely day outside.” she said quietly.
Michael stirred as he awoke from his slumber. He was still dazing and was about to rub his eyes before he realised his mum was there.
“Oh! Hi mum.”
“Its really late already, i’ll get you something to eat.” she responded.
It was at this moment that Michael noticed the same feeling that he had when he woke up the day previously. In the same instance his mum noticed the slight smell of urine again as she had before. As Michael looked up at her not knowing what to do or say, she slowly lifted his duvet up half way and saw the huge wet patch under and around his midriff.
“I cannot believe this…you have had an accident again…Oh my god, I cannot believe this.”
Michael’s mum was slighty shocked and ordered Michael out of the bed. As with before Michael went to take a shower and his mum gathered up the sodden sheets. As she put the items in the washing machine, it dawned on her that this was not normal and something had to be wrong with her son. When Michael came downstairs and sheepishly into the kitchen his mum had prepared some food as promised. She sat down on the table with him.
“Look,” she started “you have had two accidents in a row, one you can write off as one of those things, but two.”
She put her hand out and gently stroked Michael’s forearm as a sign of affection.
“Is everything okay, any problems I should know about? Do you feel ill?” she asked calmly.
“No mum,” replied Michael “everything is fine…there is nothing wrong.”
“No problems at college or with your friends or anything?” she continued.
“Mum, nothing is wrong, everything is normal.”
She had been thinking that because of the accidents it would be a good idea to see the doctor. She had thought it may be to soon for a visit to the doctors but she was very worried and felt that she needed to take control. There was nothing worse for Michael’s mother then not being able to resolve a problem and visiting the doctor was the only thing she could think of. She was running many thoughts about how these accidents had started but kept coming to dead ends. Michael was not happy with this but did not really have a leg to stand on. His mum held all the cards and if he put up a fight he knew it would make matters much worse.
Michael’s mum hoped a trip to the doctor would shed some light on why he had started wetting the bed. She called the surgery after she had finished some housework, including sorting out the wet sheets. She was left on hold for quite a while and found this strange as it had never happened before. Once the call was answered it was clear there were problems at the surgery. One of the doctors was off sick and it meant that there would be a long wait for non-emergency patients to be seen. Michael’s mum was told that the next appointment would be in ten days time. She pleaded her case with the receptionist but bed wetting was not an emergency and the appointment would have to wait. She was very frustrated by this and after ending the call thought about what to do. It was not ideal to be washing sheets for the next ten days if Michael continued to wet the bed. Hopefully it would have cleared itself up by then, but Michael’s mum was always consciences and needed to take steps to help the problem in the anyway she could. She did not think it wise to just let things be and started to ponder the best way forward.
Meanwhile Michael was playing on his games console and was wondering about having to visit the doctor. He knew how embarrassed he would be and that his mum would make matters worse when they were in the the surgery. Although he had his misgivings, Michael knew that it was probably for the best as he did not want to continue wetting the bed. He played his game for a while before heading downstairs for a drink, his mum was just getting ready to go out.
“Hey, sweetie, I am heading out to the supermarket. Do you need anything?” Michael’s mum asked.
“I would love a doughnut, please!” Michael replied, it was the best thing that had happened to him all day. He really liked them and knew his mum was trying to make him feel better.
“Okay,” Michael’s mum said “also I spoke to the surgery and there is some bad news on that front. We can’t get an appointment for ten days. But I’ll talk to you about that later, right now I gotta get going.”
She left in a hurry grabbing her handbag and shopping list from the table. Michael was left with the realisation that his problems may continue for longer then he anticipated. He thought it would be one quick trip to the doc to get some medication and then the nightmare would be finished. Now he faced the prospect of having to wake up with wet sheets for another ten days. He shook the horrible thought from his mind and got his drink. As he went back upstairs he thought about his situation and if there was anything he could do to help it.
Once back upstairs Michael stopped his game and decided to go on the internet to try and find some advice to help his situation. He found many websites concerning bed wetting and there were many helpful hints. One he took away was to stop drinking fizzy drinks, as the general consensus was that this did not help. He also noticed that slowing down his intake of fluids before bedtime was useful. Michael was glad he had some practical advice and hoped that if tried these techniques he could stop the night wettings. As he closed his computer down he spilt his drink over his desk and was not able to stop the drink going over the edge like a waterfall. It was pineapple juice and it was sticking to the surface as he moped it up with a towel. The yellow sticky liquid reminded him of waking up wet that morning and this soured his mood.
