From Hot to Cold – Chapter Thirteen
After waking and sneaking his wet nappy into his mothers room, he ate his breakfast, with her. They both waited for Eliza to rise from her bed, she was a deep sleeper like Michael. The day was much brighter and the storm from the previous night had cleared. Michael’s mum was excited about the day out with her children and reminded Michael about the doctors appointment. He had not forgotten and explained how relieved he would be once he could put this terrible ordeal behind him. She agreed and smiled at him as she was proud how mature he had been about the whole thing. There had been some low points but they had got through.
“It will be the last night you have to wear nappies, as well.” she chuckled “I think I’ll miss you wearing them.”
“Mum! Stop it, its bad enough without you teasing me.
Michael preferred the teasing to arguing, though, and he was glad he could talk to his mum without feeling to embarrassed. It had brought them closer together and they cleared the table as they heard Eliza coming down stairs.
The three of them soon left to enjoy the family day out; Michael and his sister bickered about which radio station to listen to. Their mother solved the problem by switching it off and asked them to at least be civil for her sake. It was not very often they were all together and she wanted it to be enjoyable and without arguments. They started with crazy golf, Michael and his mum really got stuck in and laughed together as they played. Eliza, while joining in, purposefully had as little fun as possible. She felt it was babyish and not befitting a young trendy women.
After, the family bought a hot dog and strolled around the park reminiscing about old memories. As they approached the lake at the edge of the parkland they found a bench and rested. Michael looked into the distance and noticed a fox zipping in and out of a hedge row. He thought about the fox in his dreams and how he wanted to make sense of it all.
It was starting to get late in the afternoon and they decided to head home as the weather was turning cold. Eliza was telling her mother all about the holiday she and her friends were going on together. She explained about all the clubs and bars she planned visit and how she would spend all day on the beach. Her mother was not impressed and explained that she thought holidays were opportunities to visit historical sites and learn about other cultures.
“Its not that kind of holiday, mum!” Eliza said with a huff.
“Well you just be careful, I don’t want to be getting any unexpected calls.” Her mother was always very sensible about these things.
Once they were home they all watched a film together after dinner. It was an animation and Michael was very bored by it. It had a princess and a romance, his sister and mum seemed to like it. The film ended and it was time to sleep, Michael’s mum told him to get a good nights sleep before his appointment and to not to worry about it.
“I am not worried, mum,” he responded “I am looking forward to it, finally get this matter sorted.”
“That is good, darling. I too hope we can sort this out. Are you okay, though, not feeling upset or anything?” she wanted to make sure her son was not just putting a brave face on.
“Yeah, I am great, honest.” he reassured her “Just want this over with.”
“Okay, sweetie, well get yourself to bed and I’ll see you in the morning.” She gave him a small hug and went upstairs.
As Michael slept his dreams about him and SkiFox continued. The pair were now inseparable and had formed a strong bond from their travels and adventures. They ran through a dense pine forest trying to escape a pack of dire wolves that were hunting them down. The wolf pack were accompanied by a huge tiger that brought up the rear. The tiger was out for blood and would stop at nothing to capture the fox. They darted between the trees avoiding the wolves teeth snapping at their heels. They found themselves approaching the edge of the forest, they could see a drop off in front and the only thing they could do was jump and take the plunge.
Michael and SkiFox fell from a great height and crashed into the river below. SKiFox was struggling to swim and he used his strong muzzle to clasp onto Michael’s back as he swam toward the river edge. The wolf pack had stopped chasing at the drop off and the two friends looked back as they clambered out of the water. They could see their nemesis starring down at them with a grimace. The giant tiger released a huge raw that echoed around the canyon surrounding the river. Michael and SkiFox continued their journey back to the clan lair and were simply glad to have avoided being caught. Michael washed in the warm, shallow pool inside the cavern and was once again blinded by the light from above. It was clearer than before and as a shape began to form in the brightness the dream abruptly ended.
